Today, Salaam Remi is the guy who flies down to St. Lucia to work with Amy Winehouse; he’s the guy who executive produced the Sex & The City soundtrack, for god’s sake. But in the early ’90s, he first made his name as the man to see if you wanted to fuse hip-hop with reggae. In fact, his work with Bobby Konders on Super Cat‘s “Ghetto Red Hot (Remix)” arguably kick-started NYC’s whole obsession with rap/dancehall fusion.
The son of studio musician and producer Van Gibbs, Remi started out playing keys on Kurtis Blow records in the mid-’80s. After stints co-producing records with Konders, Marley Marl and Funkmaster Flex, he gave The Fugees their first hit record (“Nappy Heads (Remix)”), and crossed over to the mainstream with his massive reggae-pop hit “Here Comes The Hotstepper” by Ini Kamoze. In the last decade, he’s continued his mainstream success as both Nas and Amy Winehouse’s most reliable production partner—he’s produced so many records I love, I had a hard time narrowing this one down. This list is faulty. Where is Rupee?
The Rupee song he did with Lil Kim was cool, but it just didn’t make the cut. I personally didn’t think it was as good/significant as other things he did. Trust me, this mix could have been 100 songs deep, easy.

I’m gonna say this list is spot-on telling the story behind Remi’s discography. I’m surprised this isn’t a ugghnicewatch double-disc! It could have been easily, starting with Amy Winehouse’s “In My Bed”.
As a West Indian it’s always cool when an American appreciates the music (Reggae/Soca/Calypso) and doesn’t exploit it. I’ve always appreciated Salaam Remi because of that. I think he is the most underrated producer in the game. Everyone knows the big 5 (Dre, Swizz, Pharrell, Kanye & Timbo) but I prefer Salaam’s production to those guys.
A collection this good deserves better quality sound than 128 kbps.
I’m a HUGE Salaam Remi fan, but he definitely did not (not even ARGUABLY) start NYC’s obsession with ‘dancehall/rap fusion’. Just look at ‘Criminal Minded’ and most of KRS’ early work to see plenty of evidence of dancehall used in hip-hop, 5-6 years prior in one of the genres seminal albums.
You could probably say kicked off an early 90s resurgence where dancehall cats were running over hip-hop beats instead of the other way around, though…

Great list… only major omission I see is “Zone Out” on the God’s Son album. That beat makes me want to pistol-whip my kindergarten teacher.
